Branding for hospitality

Visual identity for a restaurant: where do you start?

·2 min read ·Louise Petitjean

“I’ll deal with my image once the restaurant is running.” Many restaurant owners make that call, and it sounds reasonable: open first, look good later. But in hospitality it is usually the other way round. A restaurant’s visual identity does not come after success: it is one of its conditions.

Why a restaurant’s image is often rushed at launch

At opening, the priorities pile up fast: suppliers, hiring, the menu, logistics. In that rush the logo is made under pressure, materials are printed with whatever is at hand, and visual consistency comes last.

Many owners put the question off, convinced the image can wait until the regulars are there. The problem: that image is exactly what brings the regulars in.

What you lose by opening without coherent branding

Without a clear visual world, trust is harder to build. You have to convince more, explain more, reassure more often. Where a structured restaurant inspires confidence instantly, you start with an invisible handicap.

It affects your commercial opportunities too. In hospitality, comparable offers are everywhere: a customer will always pick the place that looks the most coherent and professional.

Your positioning suffers as well: a weak image makes it harder to hold your prices and assert your value.

Where to start, concretely

1. Define your restaurant’s world : before any logo. What atmosphere do you want to convey? Who is your target clientele? What makes you different? A lively tapas bar and a fine-dining restaurant do not speak to the same people, and that has to show in every graphic choice.

2. Create the logo and brand guidelines : logo, colours, typefaces, graphic elements. These form the foundation of everything. They have to work on a shopfront sign as much as on a menu, an Instagram story or takeaway packaging.

3. Roll it out across every material : menu, business cards, social media, window, packaging. When everything holds together you send a strong message: you master your image as much as your cooking.

When should you rebrand your restaurant?

Some signals are unmistakable. Your logo no longer looks like you. Your print and digital materials do not look like each other. You do not stand out visually from the competition. You are targeting a new clientele and your image does not speak to them.

It is never too early to lay solid foundations, and never too late to rebuild an identity that no longer represents you.
