When the brand becomes an object

Custom objects: building a stronger visual identity

·3 min read ·Louise Petitjean

Skis, a surfboard, a skateboard or a decorative object are not ordinary communication supports. They are objects people use, display and carry everywhere. Customising an object means giving it a life beyond its function: an aesthetic, emotional and identity-driven dimension.

A custom object is a powerful brand tool

A poster is forgotten. An object carrying a strong identity becomes a reference. People notice it on a slope, in a van, in a locker room or on a desk. It is not decoration: it is a brand presence where no advertising can go.

A classic advertising support has a short life and a fixed context. A custom object travels. It gets photographed, lent, commented on. It turns your clients into willing carriers of your image, something no media budget can buy.

It is also a quality signal. A brand that takes care of its objects says it takes care of the rest: its product, its service, its client relationship.

The objects that work best, sector by sector

Not every object is worth the same. The right choice depends on your world, your clients and the moment the object will actually be used.

  • Sport and lifestyle brands : skis, snowboards, boards and helmets. Everything that goes with the practice carries the brand in front of the people who really matter.
  • Companies, every sector : merchandise has become a must, provided it is desirable. A generic visual ends up in a drawer. A carefully designed world goes out every day.
  • Events and launches : an object created for the occasion travels far beyond the date. Attendees take it home and it keeps circulating.
  • Shops and places : mugs, tote bags, notebooks or decorative pieces extend the experience of the place into the client’s home.

What makes a real design rather than a logo dropped on a surface

The first mistake is sticking a logo onto an existing object. The result is recognisable, but neither desirable nor memorable.

A successful custom object starts from three constraints: the real shape of the object, the material it is printed or painted on, and the way it will be used. A board is read in movement, a mug is read head-on, a helmet is read in profile. The composition changes every time.

Then comes the craft: screen printing, digital printing, engraving, hand painting. Each technique has its own limits in colours and detail, and it is far better to design with them than to discover them in production.

My experience with custom objects

I treat objects as creative territories in their own right. Custom skis, surfboards, wooden accessories or event pieces: each project is designed for itself, respecting its constraints and its graphic opportunities.

In practice we start from your existing brand world, or we build it if there is none yet. I then draw a composition specific to the object, test it on the real template, and follow production through to the final result.

The outcome is never a simple logo adaptation. It is a genuine piece of design that stays usable and consistent with the rest of your communication.
